Update: Evernote Free accounts can connect 1 device, create larger notes, and upload more content

This blog post was updated on September 17, 2024 to reflect that note size, upload, and attachment limits were increased.

We’re introducing some updates to the Evernote Free experience, starting with a new device limit. From August 6, 2024, new and existing Free users will be able to use Evernote on only one device at a time.

Shortly thereafter, we’ll be introducing the following improvements to empower Free users to store even more important content within Evernote. If you’re a Free user, you’ll soon have access to:

  • Larger notes. We're expanding the maximum size of the notes you can create.
  • Bigger attachments. You’ll be able to upload larger files.
  • More monthly uploads. You’ll also be able to upload more files each month.

Why is the Free experience changing?

When deciding how to distribute Evernote’s many features and perks across our various subscription plans, we always look to strike a balance between making Evernote a comprehensive tool for Free users while reserving the product’s most powerful capabilities for our paying subscribers. These latest changes are another step in this process, following a series of other adjustments we’ve introduced over the past year:

Let’s take a closer look at the newest changes below.

Free accounts will be limited to 1 connected device at a time

From August 6, Free users will be able to use Evernote on one device (Desktop, Mobile, or Web) at a time. Those with Personal, Professional, and Teams accounts can continue connecting unlimited devices.

If you’re a Free user and have more than one device connected to your account, you’ll receive a pop-up the next time you open Evernote prompting you to disconnect your other devices to continue using the tool for free. If you’re not interested in upgrading to a paid account, you can follow the instructions in the pop-up to choose which devices to disconnect. Once you do so, you’ll automatically be logged out of your Evernote account on all except your chosen device.

Going forward, you can switch devices by simply logging out of Evernote on one device and logging back in on another.

Free users can create larger notes, attach larger files, and upload more monthly content

On September 17, 2024, we increased note size, attachment, and monthly upload limits for all Free accounts.

  • The maximum note size is now 200 MB (up from 25MB)
  • The maximum attachment size is now 200 MB (up from 25MB)
  • The monthly upload limit is now 250MB (up from 60MB)

With these changes, we aim to empower our Free users to explore Evernote as a secure platform for storing and accessing important content in any format, including PDFs, documents, images, videos, and audio recordings. Additionally, with the increased allowances, Free subscribers will be able to fully experience the benefits of the latest AI-powered functionalities: audio, video, and image transcription.
